India's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru was a Pandit. We are Brahmins who have memorized a significant part of the Vedas, along with the corresponding rhythms for chanting them. Many of us have now taken up other professions.

Once the two families agree to the alliance, a formal commitment ceremony takes place called a kasamdry. The family purohits fix the date of the engagement ceremony as per the Kashmiri calendar.
